The History of Bed Bug Management

I just received a copy of DR Michael Potter’s article named above. It is a very informative history lesson, which you can read at:

Have You Hugged Your Exterminator Today?

This used to be on a bumper sticker I had for a long time. I told a story at our BNI meeting this morning that I wanted to share here as well: I GOT A HUG MONDAY! A lady called very concerned that she may have Bed Bugs, so she was invited to bring a sample by for us to identify. It is not uncommon for people to assume the worst, especially with the huge media attention BBs are creating, so we try to allay their fears by being as positive as possible. When we opened her sample bag, it was “only” stored product pests, a result of some old corn cobs (decorative) on her closet floor under a lot of clothing. She was so relieved it was not BB AND that no pesticide was needed to control the situation, that half way out the door, she returned and gave me a big hug! Here at Pied Piper, it is not about the pests, it is ab out the people.

School Presentation

Each year I am invited into a public school or two to talk to 2nd or 3rd graders about “bugs”. The kids love to interact, and see some exotic specimens I have. Today I did two 2nd grade classes at Taku Elementary, very enjoyable. This year, however, I started concluding the presentations with how to avoid bringing bugs (I did not specify Bed Bugs or Roaches etc) to school. We talked about hanging or discarding of used clothes, keeping shoes by the front door, keeping backpacks in containers etc. Also, we discussed awareness as to what to do if you see a bug at home or school — tell your parents or the teacher. I also took a specimen of different stages of BB and showed them privately to the teachers to help educate them as well. Pied Piper feels a community responsibility to assist our local schools who are facing these new threats.

MEDIA:

Ken had two more interviews this week. One was for KTVA Channel 11 in Anchorage, and the other for a New York television station.

APSi Day 3

Our final day also touched on Bed Bugs, as we considered how to price realistically and fairly for what is a high labor, intensive service. We also talked about how to provide more community education through seminars and making ourselves available to interested groups. This kind of public outreach dove tails nicely with local needs groups.

I am even more confident, based on the high level of expertise in this group, that we are conducting a reasonable and professional service already. However, Cherry & I are anxious to return to Anchorage and continue our fine service AS WELL AS implement additional changes that will help our fellow Alaskans.

APSi Day 2.

Today the Pest Management Professionals gathered here discussed heat and gas fumigation techniques for BB control. In addition, we had an excellent discussion about protecting our clients and ourselves by cultivating good communication procedures. There was also great concern here about adequate insurance coverage to protect employees, clients and businesses from accidental loss or harm. The large influx of new providers and varying techniques behooves you to ask your potential inspector (canine or visual) AND service provider about their liability and Workman’s comp coverage.

We also had a very informative discussion about the unique circumstances surrounding office and retail locations and potential Bed Bug issues. Here too, our clients need to exercise caution about new or poorly trained new “experts” in the field of inspection and/or eradication.

APSi Meeting

Greetings all. This week Cherry & I are in San Antonio meeting with a group of long-standing Pest Control professionals who make up Associated Pest Services, Inc (link on “Alaska’s Pest Control Experts” page). Once again the main topic centers around Bed Bugs. We have represented here all method and manner of detection and eradication sharing their thoughts, failures and successes.

Today, Wednesday, we heard from Dr Jeff White from Bed Bug Central (see our “Bed Bugs” page) with the latest on detection devices and techniques, chemical and non-chemical methods and research. Another member presented his insights on Canine Scent Detection. Excellent discussions followed both presentations.

2011 Bed Bug Statistics

As you are aware, last year we were asked to do a six month review of our Bed Bug services or a national organization. At that time, we reported an 800% increase. However, the period we were asked to review were not typical. However, it became national news and was oft quoted on many networks and blogs.

On the other hand, our 2010 FULL YEAR REVIEW shows an overall increase of over 500% for one year, almost 800% for 2 years and a whopping 1000+% for prior years 4 & 5.  I am receiving 2-4 calls A DAY just seeking information and advice. I do not mind this, as the fear mongers, and wannabe professionals are scaring people to death. Feel free to call me at our main office, or post a question on our bed-bug page comments section. I will be pleased to respond as quickly as possible.
